What Once Was by Teen Advisor Leena

The following is a poem by Teen Advisor Leena Abdemoity:

I dream of seeing Syria’s pine trees and crystal clear lakes,
But I do not see them.
I dream of seeing za’atar bread and fresh pomegranates,
But I do not see them.
I dream of seeing children playing in the streets until sunrise,
But I do not see them.
I dream of seeing street musicians play a “tabla,”
But I do not see them.
I dream of seeing kids who are kids,
But I do not see them.
I dream of seeing futbol players at a cafe,
But I do not see them.

I only see Greece.
Not a beachscape or Greek mountains,
But tents.
Tents, and hopeless faces.
