Even after five years, I am still amazed at how much Girl Up is growing; it is truly a borderless movement. And now, I am so excited to welcome Sri Lanka to Girl Up, with the registration of 30 new clubs!

In partnership with the Sri Lanka Girl Guide Association and the Stop the Violence Campaign, the first Sri Lankan Girl Up Club was formed on October 25th in a ceremony at the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs. In an amazing show of support and passion, more than 170 girls from all around Sri Lanka attended the launch. After the launch event, Club members participated in a training program through the Prime Minister’s office and the Ministry of Education to learn how to empower themselves and girls around the world.

“I am so glad to see the UN Foundation’s Girl Up campaign launch Girl Up Clubs across Sri Lanka for the first time,” said Rosy Senanyake, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister. “In this day and age it is really important to provide the right set of leadership skills for today’s girls who will be tomorrow’s leaders.”

I am thrilled to welcome the girls of Sri Lanka to the Girl Up family, and can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together!
