I am a junior at NYC iSchool and this is my first year as a Teen Advisor. I am honored to be a Teen Advisor for the 2019-2020 year. I have always wanted to get involved in Girl Up from the moment I interacted with the organization at the 2016 Girls Summit in Washington DC. I work very hard to be engaged in my community and fight for the rights of Black people specifically Black Girls. Growing up I realized that people in my community were faced with many different problems like poverty, education inequity, environmental racism, over policing and more. I use my words and my voice to fight for my community. I am the Director of Outreach for Youth Over Guns which is a student lead coalition to end gun violence in communities like my own. I am also a Leader at the Teen Activist Project through the New York City Liberties Union where I learn about ways of advocating for my community on a legislative stance. By participating in both of these organizations, I knew how to fight for my community through local outreach and legislation on a local, state and federal level. Throughout my process of discovering my activism and advocacy skills, I had to become more confident with myself. My journey to self-love and confidence was difficult but it was the foundation of my social justice. Undoubtedly, I consider myself to be an Intersectional Feminist. My work involves advocating for Women’s rights internationally no matter their race, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status and more. I have learned to speak my own truths as a Black woman. I hope I can learn about the experiences of all women as a Teen Advisor. My feminism will never be complete until it includes the unity and acceptance of all women and people.
