Must-Hear Words from Lupita Nyong’o: Fab Female Friday

Fab Female Friday

The past few months have been action-packed for actress Lupita Nyong’o. From one award to the next, culminating in an Academy Award for her role as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave, Lupita has been lighting up screens everywhere with her gracious and insightful acceptance speeches. Below are three quotes from Lupita that every girl should hear:

1. “Finally I realized that beauty was not a thing that I could acquire or consume, it was something that I just had to be.” Keynote speech at ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon.

In her speech, Lupita spoke about how she always felt “unbeautiful” because of her dark skin. But wise words from her mother and inspiration from Sudanese supermodel Alek Wek revealed to Lupita that true beauty – one that “enflames the heart and enchants the soul” – Is defined by who you are rather than what you look like.

2. “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s, so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance.” Acceptance speech at the 2014 Oscars.

Lupita’s performance as Patsey, a young woman born and raised as a slave on a southern plantation, earned Lupita an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. During what could be one of the happiest moments in her life, Lupita pays homage to the pain and suffering that her character endured. A needed reminder to never lose perspective.

3. “When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you are from, your dreams are valid.” Acceptance speech at the 2014 Oscars.

We could not agree more. Every child deserves to be educated, healthy, safe, and counted. And every child deserves to dream!
