Why Jennifer Lopez is the Perfect Global Advocate for Girls & Women

I had the opportunity this evening to join a Giving Tuesday conversation with the Burkle Global Impact Initiative, Lynda Lopez of the Lopez Family Foundation and Jennifer Lopez, the United Nation Foundation’s new Global Advocate for Girls and Women.

Despite being on two TV shows, recently hosting the American Music Awards and getting ready for a show in Las Vegas, becoming the new UN Foundation Global Advocate for Girls and Women was a no-brainer for Jennifer.

The issues surrounding women and girls hit close to home for her after years of fighting in her own industry to be equal and heard.

“I am happy, proud and honored to be a voice of the UN Foundation,” she said. “I said ‘yes’ because I couldn’t imagine saying ‘no’ to something like this.”

Jennifer spoke from the heart about what first made her become passionate about girls health: her change in perspective after becoming a mother.

When she noticed a small bump on her weeks-old daughter Emme’s head, she remembers being caught up in emotion. She went home and laid on her bed, thinking about the other women worldwide who might not have access to the medical care they need to take care of their children.

“Everyone should have access to that [medical care]. It shouldn’t matter where you come from or what you have,” Jennifer said.

I am beyond inspired after hearing Jennifer speak tonight: she is completely dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls worldwide. The power of a single voice to start the ripple effect of change never ceases to amaze me.
