It’s a day to celebrate generosity and to support causes that make a real difference. And this #GivingTuesday can be the day you change a girl’s life in Guatemala. As we celebrate giving back and helping others, your donation can play a huge part in helping girls in Guatemala go to school – and get there safely. Through Girl Up’s SchoolCycle initiative, your gift of $125 helps provide one bike to an adolescent girl in Guatemala through our United Nations partners. We have only 24 hours to raise $20,000 to send as many bikes as possible. With your help, together we can make sure that girls in Guatemala have one fewer barrier to getting the education that is their right. How many girls we can impact – and how many bikes we can send – depends on you! Here’s how you can help: Make a gift – and encourage others – at GirlUp.org/GivingTuesday. All gifts will help Girl Up provide bikes to adolescent girls in Guatemala through our UN partners. Start a fundraiser. Instead of presents this holiday season, set up an online fundraising page and ask friends and family to give a donation toward a bike for a girl in Guatemala. Spread the word on social media. Tweet this to let your friends and family know that you’re celebrating #GivingTuesday by supporting girls’ education in Guatemala. But let’s back up for a second. You may be asking yourself, why bikes? These are the facts: Adolescent girls in Guatemala face unique challenges that prevent them from reaching their full potential. The country has high rates of early marriage and child labor, which can force girls out of school and exclude them from opportunities to become empowered and engaged members of their communities. By age 15, six out of 10 indigenous girls are out of school and almost half of Guatemalan girls have a child before the age of 20. Girls are often forced to drop out of school due to long commutes through dangerous areas to get to the closest secondary school. They frequently travel in groups for fear of harassment or even violent attacks along their route. A solution to this can be as simple as providing a girl with a bike so she can travel to and from school quickly and safely. Today is the day you can make a difference in a girl’s life in Guatemala. Thank you for celebrating #GivingTuesday with Girl Up!
