There is a new United Nations Ambassador in power. For real. The Senate confirmed Samantha Power as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations on August 1, a position that represents the United States on the U.N. Security Council and during most General Assembly meetings. Her last name is indicative of her attitude – she is ready to take action. (She even tweeted from @AmbassadorPower: “Ready to push for reform, action, and solutions. Incredible first day.”) Power emigrated to the United States from Ireland with her family when she was 9 years old. A journalist by nature with a law degree to boot, she spent time covering the war in Bosnia in the early 1990s, which catapulted her drive to convince the world to go after human rights abuses. Since then, she has published several books about human rights and genocide, one of which won a Pulitzer Prize. And did we mention that Power is a former foreign policy adviser to President Obama, who nominated her for the U.N. Ambassador position? A wordsmith who aims to put her thoughts into action for the good of humanity means she is quite the fab female. Happy two weeks on the job, Samantha Power!
