Home / About / Champions / 2014 / November / 14 / Rebecca Soni Rebecca Soni Share Page As a Girl Up champion, three-time Olympic medalist Rebecca Soni will go from shattering world swimming records to mobilizing American girls to advocate for the world’s most marginalized girls, particularly in developing countries. “Through my partnership with Girl Up, I’m excited to encourage American girls to channel their energy and compassion into becoming powerful forces for change in the lives of their peers in developing countries,” said Soni. “Where you are born should not dictate how big you can dream.” Rebecca is a 2009 graduate from the University of Southern California where she majored in communications. Originally from Plainsboro, New Jersey, Soni made a name for herself at a young age in the swimming world. Her parents, Peter and Kinga Soni, emigrated from Hungary and Romania before Rebecca and her sister were born. Besides English, Soni also speaks Hungarian. She set the world record in her 2008 Olympic Gold Medal Race in the 200m Breaststroke with a time of 2:20.22. She also won the 2009 World Championship in the 100m Breaststroke and has not lost that race since. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Rebecca won a silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke. She also beat her own record with a gold medal win in the 200-meter breaststroke.
