5 Questions to Ask Female Stars on the Oscars Red Carpet

The Oscars are this Sunday, February 28th, and who doesn’t love watching all our favorite female stars walk down the red carpet in their gorgeous, designer dresses? Let’s be real, everyone wants to see how Lupita N’yongo is going to top her pearly dress from last year. But fashion shouldn’t be all we hear about from the red carpet. With so much discussion right now around gender inequality in Hollywood, pay gaps, and far too many roles that objectify women, it’s mind-boggling that women in film aren’t asked anything more than, “Who are you wearing.”

Walking the red carpet is a major moment that captures international attention, and it’s an amazing opportunity to ask something more than the designer of a pretty outfit. Just think back to Patricia Arquette’s passionate rallying cry as she accepted her Oscar last year:

“To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s time to have wage equality once and for all. And equal rights for women in the United States of America.”

This moment is more significant than a dress. And in the spirit of the #AskHerMore campaign, here are five questions I would ask women on the red this year:

  1. How does the imbalance of genders affect filming?
  2. When playing a unique role how do you adapt the role and find ways to relate to the character?
  3. If there was one thing you could let struggling actors know what would it be?
  4. What lasting impression do you hope to make on the movie industry?
  5. What is the biggest risk you’ve taken as an actress?

They say that “the most important thing a girl wears is her confidence;” hopefully reporters keep that in mind on the red carpet this year. Think about these questions while you watch the Oscars (or any award show) from here on out!
