Girl Up Campaign featured on AOL.com

(January 11, 2011)

Today, AOL gave a “High Five” to the world’s girls by featuring a link on the AOL.com home page to the United Nations Foundation’s Girl Up campaign — an innovative campaign that seeks to educate, protect and empower girls in developing countries.

AOL’s efforts helped advance the Girl Up movement by providing AOL.com’s 15 million daily users with a link to more information and to ways American youth can channel their energy and compassion to raise awareness and funds for the world’s adolescent girls.

“We applaud AOL for helping us give a voice to the 600 million adolescent girls living in developing countries,” said Jennifer Kim Field, Director of Global Partnerships, United Nations Foundation, and Head of Girl Up. “Through the support of partners like AOL and its network of users, we can help ensure that all girls — no matter where they are born — have the opportunity to become educated, healthy, safe, counted and positioned to be the next generation of leaders.”

Funds raised through Girl Up support proven United Nations programs that help the hardest-to-reach girls in such countries as Malawi, Ethiopia, Guatemala and Liberia. Campaign supporters are encouraged to give a “High Five” to girls in developing countries by taking five minutes to learn about the issues facing girls or by donating $5 or more to provide girls with such basic needs as access to school supplies, clean water, life-saving health services, safety from violence and more.
