Why American Girls?

We know that girls can make a difference. And teens in the United States care about these issues and want to make a difference. That’s why we created Girl Up — a “for girls, by girls” campaign of the United Nations Foundation — to unite girls to change the world. Girl Up mobilizes American girls to raise awareness and funds for United Nations programs that help some of the world’s hardest-to-reach adolescent girls.

Research shows that American teens:

• Give (79 percent have donated food, clothing, or other household items)
• Get involved (76 percent have volunteered time); and
• Talk (66 percent have asked family members or friends to give money or volunteer)

When we conducted focus testing with teens about the Girl Up campaign, they said it was “not fair” that girls in developing countries face the challenges they do and asked about ways that they could help.
