World Humanitarian Day

On Aug. 19, the UN and many humanitarian aid organizations will celebrate World Humanitarian Day to recognize and honor the people who make sacrifices and endanger themselves to help others.

For this year's World Humanitarian Day, the UN and humanitarian aid organizations hope to send out the biggest social media message in history. The goal is for the world to say ‘I WAS HERE,’ so that 1 billion people, on 1 day, will be exposed to 1 unified message of hope.  To add your encouraging words to the message, click here.  Your words will be saved until Aug. 19, when this big message of hope will be sent out along with an inspiring World Humanitarian Day performance by Beyoncé.

Many humanitarian organizations improve the lives of young girls by creating economic and educational opportunities to raise girls out of poverty, providing healthcare, and protecting the lives of young girls during dangerous humanitarian crises.  These actions directly connect with the goals of the Girl Up campaign.

There are many things you can do to celebrate World Humanitarian Day. Do something nice for a friend or family member, stick up for someone who needs help, or take action to benefit your community.

World Humanitarian Day is all about helping others. I know I will take part. Will you?
