The World Cup and Girls: Take Action Tuesday

In two days, the eyes of the world will be looking toward Brazil. Earth-shaking cheers, faces painted with pride, and 32 international teams will commence the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Girl Up is not missing this global moment – and neither should you.

Tune in on Wednesday, June 11 from 11am-12pm ET for a World Cup +SocialGood panel entitled, “Girls and Women’s Empowerment: How Sports Can Promote Gender Equality.” Panelists include Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Evan Ryan, six-time Olympic medalist and Girl Up Champion Rebecca Soni, Girl Up Teen Advisor Carly Bandt, and Girl Up’s very own director, Melissa Hillebrenner. Follow the conversation online with the hashtag #WorldGoals.

No matter where in the world, sports have always been a uniting force. They connect communities, open dialogue, and provide a positive outlet to channel personal struggles. Tomorrow’s panel will discuss how sports play a unique role in the lives of girls around the world.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup will be an international celebration of national pride as well as global unity. It is the perfect moment to communicate the importance of partnerships and raise awareness of key development issues. Girl Up is making sure that girls are a part of the conversation. Why? Because, we too want to scream “goooaaaalll!”
