San Francisco prides herself on many things: the crooked streets, the Golden Gate Bridge, authentic Chinatown, rich galleries, organic food, colorful people, and now, an outstanding Unite for Girls Tour!
This past weekend, Teen Advisors from across the country and youth from the Bay Area came together at the Levi Strauss & Co. headquarters to support girls in the developing countries.
With passports in hand, more than 200 attendees visited country kiosks on Malawi, Liberia, Guatemala, and Ethiopia, learning about the lives of the girls who live in those countries.
Actress and Girl Up supporter Alexandra Daddario attended and participated in the activities by lifting heavy jugs of water at the Malawi kiosk and balancing a basket of fruit on her head!
I particularly enjoyed leading the Guatemala booth, educating teens on issues facing young Guatemalan women and writing inspiring letters to them.
When the traveling was over, the phenomenal Project Girl Performance Collective wowed us all with a performance on the power of girls, as did the stirring performance by fellow teen, Olivia Somerlyn.
Panelist Emily Pryor (United Nations Foundation), Tamsin Smith (SlipStream Strategy), Denise Dunning (AGALI) and Teen Advisor Rocio Ortega, discussed the problems facing girls and shared first-hand inspirational success stories of Girl Up at work around the globe.
I have come out of this weekend more knowledgeable about the issues and solutions, and feel empowered to create change.
But most importantly, I came out of this trip with fabulous and similarly inspired friends.
Without a doubt, my favorite part of the entire weekend was sharing this experience with the other accomplished Teen Advisors and building relationships that will last a lifetime!
We are now more empowered to help girls just like us, half way around the world.
