Everyday I’m inspired by the work I do for the United Nations Foundation, but today I was completely blown away: Girl Up and Project Girl Performance Collective participated in TEDxWomen’s global conversation on the importance of women and girls!
This incredible group of teens rocked the stage at the Paley Center in New York as part of a global event, with speakers in two cities and more than 100 organized viewing conferences around the world. Not to mentions the thousands of viewers who were live streaming video.
The performance was part of a segment of TEDxWomen hosted by writer, actress and activist, Jane Fonda. And let me tell you, these girls impressed every last person there!
I was especially moved by their final song, I’m a Girl, where they sang, “Each of us can use our voice, but they all blend better in a song.
Separate we're still powerful, but together we're most strong.” The song closed out a performance that touched on the issues of child marriage, safety and violence and the importance of female empowerment.
Their work exemplifies the mission of Girl Up to engage American girls to support their peers around the globe.
TEDxWomen was born out of TED (a non-profit that is dedicated to spreading ideas on technology, entertainment and design), and is an initiative that enables hosts to create independently organized, TED-style events.
The goal is to use live speakers, video and personal insight to hold discussions on issues that affect women around the world.
The Girl Up presentation was part of a section of the conference that also featured Iyeoka Ivie Okoawo, a first generation Nigerian-American award-winning poet, recording artist, and TED fellow; Dr. Oz, host of the Emmy Award–winning The Dr. Oz Show; and esteemed feminist activist Gloria Steinem!
Girl Up and Project Girls Performance Collective were chosen to conclude the event to share the girl-perspective.
They did a truly amazing job representing girls everywhere.
This group challenges the way society views this generation of philanthro-teens and encourages their peers to realize their potential and reach for their dreams. The fact that they are talented singers and actresses only makes the message stronger!
