My First GirlRaiser!

For a few months now I have been responding to emails, Facebook posts and tweets from girls looking for ideas on ways to get more involved with Girl Up. I always tell them that one of the best ways is to host a GirlRaiser event, so last Friday I decided to do just that.

I held my first GirlRaiser at a bar and restaurant called Town Tavern in Washington, DC. Town Tavern has a program called “Philanthropy Fridays” where each week they allow people to host an event from 6-11pm for a charity of their choice. Attendees pay $5 to enter and get special deals all night.

After organizing a day and time with the Town Tavern staff, I invited my family and friends to meet me there after work to give a girl a “High Five” and learn more about Girl Up. Many of the people who came asked me questions about Girl Up and what we are doing to help girls all over the world, so I got the chance to share all the cool things we do with my family and friends. It was really exciting!

I also got emails and donations from family and friends who weren’t able to attend but were really interested in finding out more about how they could support Girl Up.

Even though it was a small event, I still raised more than $150 dollars for Girl Up and shared our goals with more than 50 people. This was a great first GirlRaiser experience but now that I know what to expect, I’m looking forward to planning another one early next year!

You can create your own GirlRaiser team here, or sign up to host an event!

Let me know in the comments about your GirlRaiser experiences -- I would love to hear what ideas you have tried!
