I’m Thankful For: Katie And Fahmida

As the holiday season approaches, all of us here at Girl Up are realizing how many great things we have in our lives. So in celebration of the American holiday Thanksgiving, we’ve all come up with a list of things we’re thankful for.

I am thankful for my sisters, who I look up to even though I am the oldest. This year my sixteen year old sister has taught herself to play the guitar, been elected to student government, and been named a soccer all-star. Not only do they inspire me, but they’re also my favorite people to hang out with!

I am thankful for libraries. I love to read, and there is nothing better than being able to peruse thousands of books and take any of them home for free!

I am thankful for sports, which I love to both play and watch. They’re a great way to connect with people in your own community and around the world. When I lived in Turkey, I had so much fun playing soccer with my friends, and changing the minds of those who thought sports were only for boys!

My mother has been the most influential person in my life and I am most thankful for her. The opportunities that I’ve been given in life and the adventures that I’ve been fortunate enough to pursue were never an option for her. Often times we forget that the path we walk has been paved by those before us, and the opportunities that we take advantage of have been fought for by people before us. My mom has fought for me relentlessly, to give me everything she never had, so that I can build myself in a world with endless opportunities.

I am thankful for the friends that I’m surrounded by because I learn from each and every conversation I have with them. It is wonderful to be lucky enough to have certain people in our lives that can teach us about different walks of life and guide us at times when we are struggling with our own. I learn from their insights and their experiences. I am thankful for the ways that my friends and I have been able to share in each others’ lives! I am thankful for the fact that they are quirky and they can always do something silly that can make me laugh.

I am very very thankful for the fall colors around us at this time of the year. They are a reminder of how colorful, vibrant and beautiful our ultimate home, planet Earth, is. I missed it a lot when I was abroad and now that I’m back in the States, I am thankful for my enjoyable walks in the morning amidst the bright yellows, oranges, reds and all the hues in between. The season is beautiful and there is a certain charm to it that is fleeting but special.
