Giving a Successful Presentation

(Avery, middle, is a Teen Advisor for Girl Up)

A presentation at school does not have to take months of planning or even be stressful.

All you need is a supportive teacher, a few friends and the drive to help a girl who does not have many opportunities.

I got a few friends together to figure out how we could spread the word about Girl Up. We decided that doing a presentation would be the best idea.

They emailed a teacher and I got the posters and supplies from Girl Up and started preparing my speech.

My presentation consisted of what I was going to say, pictures, two  impactful videos and an activity.

On the day of the presentation, we set everything up and dragged the heavy jerry cans we were using as a demonstration into position.

Then, everyone began filing in and the presentation started.

I talked about what it was like for girls in Ethiopia, Guatemala, Liberia and Malawi, and how we are so fortunate to be where we are now.

To make it interactive, I had two people carry jerry cans while I talked about the issues facing girls in Ethiopia.

This let them see what it is like for girls in that country who have to carry water for up to 15 hours a day. I also talked about why it is so important to invest in girls and how easily someone can make a difference in our lives.

When the presentation was over, we passed out letters for everyone to write to girls in UN programs that Girl Up supports.

In the end, 25 people signed up to learn more about Girl Up and become part of my Girl Up club.

Getting people involved doesn’t have to be hard. You just have to show how passionate you are about the work you are doing and make them understand why girls are so important!
