Girl Up goes Glamorous!

Last night, I was lucky enough to attend Glamour magazine’s Women of the Year event, honoring some of the most celebrated women of 2010. The awards program — which celebrated its 20th anniversary last night — was held at Carnegie Hall in New York City. I was in the company of five of our incredible Girl Up teen advisors for the evening!

It was an amazing night for everyone in attendance as it featured some of the most inspirational women of the world from all walks of life. The stage lit up with the likes of Julia Roberts, Cher, Chelsea Clinton, Fergie, Janet Jackson, Lindsey Vonn, Mia Hamm, Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and the one-and-only, Oprah Winfrey!

And we couldn’t have been more proud to have not just one, but TWO supporters of Girl Up honored on stage alongside these legends: Girl Up Global Advocate Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan, who was presented with Glamour magazine’s Woman of the Year award; and our own teen advisor Hannah Salwen, who was named as one of Glamour magazine's 20 Amazing Young Women of the Year!

We were seated in a section with other teens who had been invited to attend the evening, and most of the night’s honorees addressed our area in particular with messages of hope and encouragement for young girls everywhere.

But it was Glamour’s Editor-in-Chief Cynthia Leive who best summed up the spirit of the night when she said, “I've found that our winners have three things in common: they stand up tall, shoulders back; they are willing to fail; and they are optimists - about our world and their power to make a difference. May it rub off on all of us.” We couldn’t agree more!
