Rocio Ortega knows a thing or two about story-telling. She not only spreads the word about Girl Up as a Youth Champion at Wellesley College, where she is a sophomore, but also tells stories behind and in front of the lens as a broadcast citizen journalist with non-profit GlobalGirl Media.
Now Nickelodeon wants to tell the story of Rocio to the world – and we can totally see why. They have awarded her with a 2013 Teen Nick HALO Award! HALO stands for Helping And Leading Others, and Rocio definitely exemplifies those words. As a leader, the Los Angeles native helps to empower young women as an advocate through her volunteer work. After participating in Global Girls Media workshops, she decided she wanted to help lead them.
"We figured the best way to change media is by actually giving the camera to a young girl and letting her tell her own story,” she said.
Nickelodeon has also donated $10,000 to GlobalGirl Media in her honor.
This Sunday, November 17, Rocio will be at the HALO awards with a bunch of awesome people: host Nick Cannon, Los Angeles Clippers member Chris Paul – the celebrity matched with Rocio – other awesome honorees, and more.
Be sure to tune in to Nickelodeon at 8 pm EST and cheer on Rocio! We’re so proud of you, Rocio!
