Wow – it's amazing how far we've come since our first Unite for Girls Tour Pep Rally in New York City! We've been all across the country — we've been as far as L.A., Seattle, and even Denver, and today we just finished in Washington, D.C., our own backyard!
What a great afternoon. Hundreds of girls and boys from the DC area and beyond showed up at THEARC, home of the Boys and Girls Club of D.C. (thank you, hosts!), to give High Fives and learn all about how they can unite for girls in developing countries. And of course, we had some pretty awesome special guests: Fashion photographer, author, and Girl Up Champion Nigel Barker, WNBA All-Star and Girl Up Champion Alana Beard, and Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Estelle (and yes, we danced to “American Boy”). Thank you all for coming and making this pep rally rock!
What’s even cooler is that ALL of our fabulous Teen Advisors met for the first time, and really showed such great leadership and enthusiasm that was an example to everyone. And that’s not all! Our own family at the UN Foundation got to participate in a Girl Up Pep Rally for the first time, including our CEO Kathy Calvin, who was just floored by the vibe and positive energy in the room, and how eager of all the attendees are to take Girl Up back to their communities and classrooms and make an impact to help girls in developing countries.
"I'm going to man up, and I'm going to Girl Up. And I'm going to let you do the same," Nigel told everyone. Estelle suggested that instead of spending $5 on two cupcakes, that we spend it on giving a High Five to "change the course of a girl's life." We love that idea! "We're here to inspire each other. We're here to grow."
And Alana Beard wants us all to remember that "when other people say you can't, say I WILL. Be leaders."
Miss Maryland USA and Miss Maryland Teen USA also stopped by. Here they are giving a shout out to Girl Up!
For those of you who couldn’t make it, we Livestreamed the event, so if you didn’t get to watch earlier, you can check out all of the video clips here.
There is plenty more to come out of this weekend, so stay tuned!
