Hi, I’m Tanya! I am a native Hindi speaker because I emigrated from India to the United States . at a very young age. I currently live in Birmingham, Ala.
I’m 15 and a sophomore at Spain Park High School, a double blue ribbon school. In school, I’m a part of the nationally recognized Debate Team, a community-service initiative called Key Club, and the National Junior Honor Society. I have also been involved in my school’s Scholar’s Bowl Team in the past and have been a member of my middle and high school’s Peer Helping Society for the past four years.
I recently founded a Girl Up Club at Spain Park. As the club president, I work to spread Girl Up’s vision. Together, in just four months, our club has raised more than a $1,000 for Girl Up!
I have always had a passion for volunteering, and in my spare time I volunteer at Children’s Hospital in Alabama in the Clinical Emergency Department and the Gift Shop. I also “walk the walk to end global poverty” for my church’s Partnership Walk every year.
My interests include writing poetry (I have been published several times in the Creative Communications Anthology), reading historical fiction, and dancing for leisure.
For the past year I have been a writer for an online magazine called Sweet Designs, a magazine for girls, by girls! I also read, write, play the clarinet and speak Spanish fluently.
I believe I am who I am because of my parents and I respect them a lot! I also adore my brother and love supporting him at his basketball and lacrosse games.
My ultimate goal is to become an OB-GYN and work to provide health care for women in developing countries like Tajikistan and Uganda who cannot afford a visit to the doctor.
I am honored to be a Teen Advisor for Girl Up and excited to help make a positive change for girls around the world!
