Hey! My name is Rocio Ortega. I’m 17 years old and attend Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, CA.
I am a proud Latina born from two Mexican-born parents who have taught me the value of hard work and education
In my high school I’m the Student Body Secretary, Battalion Commander for the Army JROTC program and Girl Up Club Founder — which has sky rocketed! In my community I am a teen broadcast citizen journalist for Global Girl Media (which is how I found out about Girl Up) and a Financial Literacy Ambassador for the Pan-American Bank.
I have had the prestige honor of serving as a U.S. House of Representatives Page for the 111th Congress at Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. under U.S. Congresswoman Grace F. Napolitano who I have interned for twice at her District Office in Santa Fe Springs, CA.
I was named the 2011 Woman of the Year — a U.S. Congressional Award for volunteering from Congresswoman Napolitano.
I have had the honor of attending such programs for female empowerment like the 2011 California Girls State program, the Young Women’s Political Leadership Program and the International Women’s Media Conference both in Washington, D.C.
I am all about female empowerment and getting female representation in all professional fields whether it is in politics, the media or the military… I strongly believe we must all come together!
That’s why I want to attend Georgetown University and major in Political Science in hopes of running for office one day. For these reasons and more I am very thrilled to serve as a Teen Advisor for Girl Up.
Ambassador Verveer said “investing in girls is smart economics,” and that’s the motto I go by now. It’s time to have our voices heard! Go girls!
