Emily Harwell

Teen Advisor

Hi! I’m Emily Harwell from Tampa, Florida. I am 15 years old and  a sophomore at Berkeley Preparatory School.

My favorite school subjects are Latin, English, and history, and I am involved in many school-related activities.

One of my favorite extracurricular activities at school is Latin Club. I have earned many academic awards at Latin competitions at the local, state, and national levels.

I am a tutor at my school’s writing center, and I am planning on writing for my school’s newspaper and participating in model UN and mock trial next year.

When I am not at school, I love to read, write, travel, have fun with friends and family, and volunteer. I am a writer and a teen advisor for Differences Magazine, an online magazine for young adults.

I also spend a large amount of my free time volunteering for various Tampa-area organizations such as the Glazer Children’s Museum, where I was a camp counselor over the summer, and Metropolitan Ministries, which serves Tampa’s poor and homeless.

This past summer, I volunteered with my church in Belize in Succotz, a town about ten miles from the Guatemalan border. I count the time I spent in Belize as one of the most amazing and inspiring times of my life.

I am excited to be a Teen Advisor because I want to help girls in developing countries gain the same economic, educational, and health care opportunities as boys and men.

I also want to educate American women and girls about challenges women face in the world today, like gender-based violence and a lack of education.

Lastly, I want to inspire Americans to take action in the campaign for global equality so all women and girls have the chance to fulfill their dreams.
