Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is Girl Up?
Girl Up is a campaign of the United Nations Foundation that gives American girls the opportunity to channel their energy and compassion to raise awareness and funds for programs of the United Nations that help some of the world’s hardest-to-reach adolescent girls.
  2. Why is the campaign focused on helping adolescent girls in developing countries?
Close to half of today’s 1.2 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 19 are adolescent girls, and most of them live in developing countries. Many girls struggle for basic opportunities to go to school, see a doctor, or be included in their communities. By making these opportunities available to girls, we can make a lifelong impact on their well-being and the well-being of their families, communities, and our world for generations to come.
  3. How can I help?
Give a "High Five" at GirlUp.org and help make a difference in the life of one girl. Then help us reach even more girls by spreading the word through your social networks, starting a Girl Up team, or holding a fundraiser in your school, congregation, or club. Check out the website for resources to help you get started.
  4. How does my High Five donation get to girls?
Every High Five donation of $5 or more supports proven United Nations programs that target five high-impact areas for girls — education, health, safety, leadership, and data — and helps girls in developing countries become educated, healthy, safe, counted, and positioned to be the next generation of leaders.
  5. What projects will Girl Up funds support?
Girl Up will fund United Nations programs that provide the world’s hardest-to-reach girls with life-changing opportunities like the ability to go to school, see a doctor, access clean water in their communities, and stay safe from violence. For example:
    • In Ethiopia and Guatemala, primary school is compulsory but few girls have money to afford the resources they need to stay in school. Girl Up will provide pencils, books, and other necessities so that girls can go to school, participate in class, and complete their education.
    • In Ethiopia, women and girls walk an average of six hours a day to obtain fresh water for their families. This often prevents them from attending school and can put girls in danger when they are far from home. Girl Up will provide safe water solutions in 36 communities in Ethiopia. By building wells, Girl Up will bring clean water closer to home, so that girls can stay safe and have time to go to school and study.
  6. Does 100 percent of the money I raise go to girls in developing countries?
Five percent of each donation will be used to defray the costs of tracking and monitoring donations and ensuring proper management and oversight of the funds once they are dispersed to the selected programs.
  7. My organization would like to support Girl Up. Where do I start?
We are excited for local organizations to get involved. Check back here soon for our partner toolkit for ideas on how your organization can organize an event or fundraiser, convene supporters in your community or help spread the word. You can also contact us at info@GirlUp.org with questions.
  8. What is the UN Foundation’s history on working to support adolescent girls?
Since our founding 12 years ago, we have invested $44 million in support of girl programs and helped build a community of girl advocates and champions through our work on such key initiatives as the Coalition for Adolescent Girls and the United Nations Adolescent Girl Task Force.
  9. What is the campaign’s affiliation with the United Nations?
The UN Foundation works with the United Nations to connect people, ideas, and resources with the UN to solve the great global challenges of the 21st century. Through the Girl Up campaign, the UN Foundation is able to support UN programs that have proven successful in improving the lives of girls.
  10. Can boys get involved?
Absolutely. We encourage everyone who wants to make life better for adolescent girls in developing countries to join the campaign by giving a High Five, starting a Girl Up team, or helping us spread the word about the campaign.
  11. What job opportunities are available for Girl Up?
